What is Full Service History?
If you're in the market for a used vehicle, you will have come across the phrase "full service history" quite a lot and are maybe wondering why it's worth mentioning. Often abbreviated to FSH, a full service history is evidence that a vehicle has been maintained well and according to the guidelines of the manufacturer.
For the vehicle seller, a car that has been serviced in line with the manufacturer's specifications and has all the documentation to prove it i.e. a full service history, holds higher value than the same that does not have a full service history. It is also more attractive on the market as all potential buyers would rather know what has been done on the vehicle. Servicing regularly, on time and according to the manufacturer's guidelines will keep your service history safe, missing services will mean only a partial service history, which limits how much you can sell the vehicle for.
Why is a Full Service History important?
With technological advances, cars have become more complicated to maintain and as such, methods of repairing and servicing have become less generic. Simply put, diagnostics and repairs are best done by technicians who are qualified to operate on specific brands and the parts used should always be genuine. This is another benefit of servicing at manufacturer approved dealerships - you can be certain they have all the resources required. When it comes to selling a vehicle that ticks this important box, you can be sure that you'll get more bank for your car, as the buyer has reassurance that the work done on it has been according to the manufacturer's guidelines.
Keeping a Full Service History
Every new car comes with a service book which includes a recommended service schedule from the manufacturer. Everytime you take your car in for a service, ensure that the book is stamped to prove that the recommended service is completed. After buying a used car, it is important to check the service schedule and continue to maintain the vehicle accordingly.
How do you know if a car has a Full Service History?
If a car is being advertised with a full service history, you should always ask to see it. For older vehicles, all paperwork and receipts should be available with the book. If the vehicle has been well-maintained, the book will be stamped and dated. For newer models, the history can even be available digitally.
