Service Plan vs Maintenance Plan vs Warranty

  • Service Plan vs Maintenance Plan vs Warranty

So you just purchased your first car? You've shown it around the city and given it a few digits on the clock and now it's about that time where you take it in for a check-up...Hm. Are you aware of the costs involved? Are you on a service plan? What does it cover? What's a maintenance plan? Today we unpack the differences between these two and what they mean for you.

Service plan: A service plan covers the regular costs of servicing your car, including parts and labour, on a needs basis as determined by the vehicle manufacturer. This would last until a specific mileage or a number of years stipulated by the manufacturer. A service plan does not cover the following:

1. Paint and bodywork as a result of wear and tear.

2. Damage and maintenance as a result of vehicle abuse and negligence.

3. Accessories, electrical wiring items, wheels, wheel alignment, tyres, and all glass such as windshields and car windows.

Car maintenance plan: A car maintenance plan is slightly more comprehensive than a service plan as it covers any electrical or mechanical faults (engine, gearbox and exhaust system), both labour and parts as well as wear and tear items such as wiper blades and brake pads.

A car maintenance plan does not cover the following:

1. Wheel alignment, tyres and windscreens.

Manufacturer's warranty

A warranty  includes cover for engine-related faults that may arise, causing your vehicle to fail. The manufacturer will cover any factory faults, but will not cover the following:

  1. Accidental damage or damage as a result of environmental factors.
  2. Wear and tear items.
  3. Cosmetic parts.
  4. Damage as a result of improper car care.

Both a service and a car maintenance are important to drivers. A service, though only covering serviceable parts, is essential as your car needs to be serviced according to the manufacturer's guidelines to keep running in smooth condition while a car maintenance plan covers costly repairs that may arise at any point. A manufacturer's warranty, though standard, is easily voidable should you be in breach of the conditions. It is of utmost importance to be in the know about what could render your warranty void. It is advisable to read through the fine print and make an informed decision when purchasing any of these, and to ensure that whatever you choose keeps your warranty intact.
